Early into Thursday night’s tilt between the Washington Capitals and Seattle Kraken, a big hit led to a fight between two unexpected opponents: T.J. Oshie and Yanni Gourde.

Oshie, who is a Washinton State native and is playing his first-ever NHL game in Seattle, levelled Brandon Tanev along the boards. Gourde didn’t take a liking to that at all and dropped the gloves with No. 77.

The stars engaged moreso in a wrestling match, with rights being thrown at the end and the bout lasting quite a bit before the referees broke it up at the benches.

Both received major fighting penalties.

This is Oshie’s 10th career fight (including preseason, regular season and playoffs) and his seventh with the Capitals, per HockeyFights. It also wasn’t his first fight with Gourde; both dropped the gloves two years ago in the bubble when Washington faced the Tampa Bay Lightning in a round robin showdown during the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Through 13 games this season, Oshie has three goals and six assists for nine points, including four in his last four outings. He recently returned from a lower-body injury.
