WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Capitals have added another forward to their arsenal in Sonny Milano.

Washington has signed Milano to a one-year, one-way contract worth $750,000. He has been placed on waivers for the purpose of a loan to the Hershey Bears. If he clears, he will report to the Bears on Monday.

After not receiving a qualifying offer from the Anaheim Ducks and hitting free agency this offseason, Milano had signed a professional tryout with the Calgary Flames. However, he was released from that PTO prior to the start of the 2022-23 campaign after going scoreless through four preseason games.

In 66 games with the Ducks last season, the 26-year-old had 14 goals and 20 assists for 34 points. He also had good chemistry with Trevor Zegras. Milano, a 2014 first-round pick, has 81 points in 197 career NHL games.

It’s a solid depth signing that’s low-risk, low-reward for the Capitals. The left wing has plenty of upside and is still young, and if anything, he will add a lot to the Bears offense this season. Plus, if the team needs a call-up in a winger, he’s a good option to have. Milano has shown that he can produce up at the NHL level; he has great speed and is a crafty playmaker who can get to the high-danger areas and finish his chances.

WIth a player like Milano, the Capitals will have an option that can play top-6 and power-play minutes if needed.

Overall, it’s a solid signing for Washington. If it works, it’s another low-cost signing that’ll benefit the team up in the Show or down in the minors. And if it doesn’t, it’s only a one-year deal that doesn’t really do much to disrupt the team’s salary cap. But given what he can bring to the table, he should be able to make an impact in at least Hershey.
