Capitals Sabres

With Friday’s tilt between the Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres knotted at 3, Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals found themselves catch quite a lucky break at a critical early point in the third period.

Just minutes into the frame, Victor Olofsson and Rasmus Asplund went on a 2-on-1 break. Ilya Samsonov was able to stop Olofsson on the initial feed. He then got across to stop Asplund on the follow-up.

Samsonov couldn’t quite cover up as the puck got loose, and as Dmitry Orlov attempted to clear it, he turned the puck open to a wide-open Olofsson. That’s when chaos erupted.

Alex Ovechkin did his best Olie Kolzig impression, stacking the legs and diving to prevent Olofsson’s empty-netter. The Finn whistled the shot wide and high, and though Ovi didn’t get a piece of it, his willingness to dive in front and defensive play were a major help in avoiding a goal against.

Here’s the entire sequence:

It is currently 3-3 in the third period.
