Capitals Re-Sign Nicolas Aube-Kubel

The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel to a one-year, $1.225 million contract.

ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel to a one-year, $1.225 million contract.

Aube-Kubel's extension comes less than an hour before the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline.

Washington had claimed Aube-Kubel off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 5 to add forward depth. Through 36 games, he has two goals and six assists, along with 77 hits and a +/- rating of plus-3.

Aube-Kubel has mainly been playing a bottom-6 role, though he had also gotten time on the top line alongside Alex Ovechkin and Dylan Strome. plays the game with speed and physicality, battles hard and can generate pressure and scoring chances.

With the Capitals selling ahead of the deadline and having to handle several pending unrestricted free agents, Aube-Kubel and Nick Jensen were the only ones to receive extensions. Garnet Hathaway, Marcus Johansson, Lars Eller, Erik Gustafsson and Dmitry Orlov were all traded.

Washington now has just four UFAs left to address: Conor Sheary, Craig Smith, Trevor van Riemsdyk and Matt Irwin.
