WASHINGTON — Things did not end well or go right for the Washington Capitals on Thursday, as the red-hot team fumbled in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Evgeny Kuznetsov was trying to get something going on offense and execute a nice play in OT, but a turnover and subsequent wipeout led to a 2-on-0 break for Ottawa and the game-winner for Alex DeBrincat.

Kuznetsov took accountability for the OT winner, while explaining what he saw on the play.

"I don't know. It was kind of wait, trying to avoid where the guy's gonna and he just kind of put his stick right perfect on the puck," Kuznetsov said.

The 30-year-old didn't hesitate to say that his play in OT led to the loss, but added that mistakes happen and that the team will be able to move on quickly.

"It was my mistake, but only dead people don't make mistakes, right?" Kuznetsov said. "Unfortunately, that's how it is. I take responsibility for sure."

Kuznetsov also turned over the puck on the game-tying goal.

Here's what else was said in the room following the defeat:

Alex Ovechkin

On what he saw on the OT winner: "Turnover, mistake and it's back in our net."

On Darcy Kuemper's strong performance: "Obviously he was stunning tonight and he was stunning against New York. It's tough loss, it's on us and we can't do that."

Darcy Kuemper

On uncharacteristic play for Washington after hot stretch: "I think we got away a little bit from why we've been having such a good month here. I think it'll be easy to recognize and turn things around. Not worried from that standpoint. Got to make sure we're better next game."

On the Capitals escaping with a point: "That is probably a bit of when things are going well for the team. You're feeling good even when you're having a bad game, you kind of find a way and we're able to do that. But we're disappointed we weren't able to get both points."
