ARLINGTON, V.A. — Alex Ovechkin is on a mission to open training camp, and the Washington Capitals captain is going all in on drills.

The Great 8 was taking part in a shooting and forechecking drill in the second part of Group A practice. And as he cycled in, he went up against Garnet Hathaway and more in a battle for the puck. It became an all-out scrum along the boards for the puck, and Ovechkin didn’t hold back.

Ovechkin and more slammed against the boards as they battled for the puck. Then, the 6-3, 238-pound left wing took down the 6-3, 208-pound Garnet Hathaway, and then had some fun with it. With the help of others, he dragged the forward along the ice before laying on top of him.

It was all fun and games to close out a busy Group A practice, and everyone was okay.

The 37-year-old took part in the full practice that went full speed the whole time. Head coach Peter Laviolette even stopped practice early to make his players skate after being unhappy with an earlier drill.
