Martin Fehervary, one of the Washington Capitals’ young defensemen, has agreed to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.

The contract carries an average annual value of $2.675 million, according to a press release.

Fehervary, 23, is coming off his second full season in the NHL, one in which he set a career-high with 10 assists in addition to leading the Capitals with 217 hits.

A left-handed defenseman, Fehervary is expected to take on an important role within the team’s blue line next season, even after the recent addition of Joel Edmundson.
