Opening the Calder Cup Finals on the wrong end of two consecutive shutouts, the Hershey Bears bounced back to take Game 3 from the Coachella Valley Firebirds — but only after a nail-biting 5-4 finish.

It was Ethen Frank who put an end to the Bears’ offensive slump, scoring the game’s first goal 13 minutes into the first period. Firebirds forward Brogan Rafferty countered five minutes later, resulting in a tie scored headed into the second period.

One minute into the second, Bears foward Joe Snively found the back of the net to push Hershey ahead. An insurance goal from Sam Anas in the period’s final minutes pushed the team’s lead to 3-1.

However, Coachella Valley refused to back down without a fight. A Carsen Twarynski goal pushed the Firebirds right back into it — a moment undone a minute later with a goal by Hershey’s Garrett Pilon.

With five minutes to go, a goal from Coachella Valley’s Cameron Hughes narrowed the Bears’ lead to 4-3. In the final minute of regulation, the Firebirds tied it and sent the game to overtime.

With seven minutes to go in overtime, Hershey forward Riley Sutter played the hero, beating Coachella Valley goalie Joey Daccord to secure the Bears’ 5-4 win.
