WASHINGTON — Dmitry Orlov found out before the game that he was shipped off to the Boston Bruins along with Garnet Hathaway, and per his agent, he is in shock.

Orlov's agent, Mark Gander, told The Athletic's Tarik El-Bashir what No. 9 is thinking about the deal.

"He is in shock but also excited because he wants to win another Cup," Gandler said via El-Bashir. "Once you have one, it's hard to get it out of your blood."

Orlov and Hathaway were traded shortly before the Capitals' matchup with the Anaheim Ducks. In return, Washington acquired Craig Smith, a 2023 first-rounder, 2024 third-rounder and 2025 second-rounder. The Minnesota Wild were also involved in the deal, helping the Bruins retain 50 percent of Orlov's salary and sending Andrei Svetlakov to D.C., who then flipped him to Boston.

Over 14 years in the organization and 11 years up with the big club, Orlov racked up 256 points over 686 career games. He has three goals and 16 assists through 43 games this season and on Tuesday, passed Kevin Hatcher for the fourht-most games played by a defenseman in franchise history.

Washington currently sits out of a playoff spot and is apparently selling going into the trade deadline.

“We would like to thank Dmitry and Garnet for their contributions to our organization,” general manager Brian MacLellan said. “Dmitry has been with our organization for almost 14 years and was a key contributor in helping us win the Stanley Cup in 2018. Garnet has been an important part of our team and a role model off the ice for his contributions to our community. We wish both players all the best with Boston."
