Ovechkin Listed As Day-To-Day For Capitals With Upper-Body Injury

ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals announced on Monday that captain Alex Ovechkin is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Ovechkin suffered a scary-looking injury in Sunday’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs and left the game early in the third period. He did not return.

Ovechkin was on a breakaway and tripped over Erik Kallgren’s stick before going awkwardly into the boards. He stayed down for a moment as a trainer came out, but was able to get up and skate off under his own power. He did not return to the game, and head coach Peter Laviolette had no update on Ovechkin, but T.J. Oshie said he talked to his teammate in the locker room after the game and believes he will be okay.

“I’ve never met anyone tougher than that guy. We all hope he’s fine. I just talked to him and I think he’ll be all right. It’s always scary seeing Big 8 go down and lay on the ice. He’s a tough guy. But if there was anyone I’d imagine wouldn’t miss any more time than he needs to, it’d be 8,” Oshie said on Sunday.

Through 77 games, Ovechkin has led the Capitals with 50 goals and 90 points. He has also hit various milestones and made history time and time again in his 17th season.

The Capitals are scheduled to honor Ovechkin with a pregame ceremony on Tuesday against the New York Islanders to celebrate the 36-year-old taking over as the NHL’s third all-time leading goal-scorer. He passed Jaromir Jagr with his 767th career tally back on March 15 at home against New York.
