Capitals forward Lars Eller impressed in the skate test.

Some of the Washington Capitals have been hitting the ice ahead of training camp, and several took the ice on Friday to fine-tune their skating with one of the best coaches.

Capitals teammates Lars Eller, Hendrix Lapierre, Joe Snively, Garnet Hathaway and Alex Alexeyev, as well as free agent Peter Laviolette III, Hershey Bears signee Sam Anas and Maryland native Evan Orloff, took the ice to work with Marco on Friday.

“Got some cool kids in the classroom this year,” Marco wrote on Instagram.

Marco has been working with several Washington skaters over time, including Eller and T.J. Oshie, and was recently a guest coach at Capitals Development Camp. Eller also recently took the ice with Marco to coach for the first time at Ashburn Ice House.

At camp, she placed emphasis on different skills with several difficult drills. This included edge work on one foot, skating through athletic ladders and striding in sync with a metronome. Marco also encouraged players to give a full effort and not worry about falling or how they look. Because in the end, it’s all about getting better.

Laviolette III spoke on what Marco brings to the table and said working with her has helped tremendously.

“She’s fantastic, she’s the best, she gets the job done,” Laviolette III said. “She’s very firm with her messages to get across, and she does a great job. The first time I went out with her, I called my dad (Washington head coach Peter Laviolette) right after the skate. I said, ‘I might be this bad at hockey.’ As you guys saw, everybody all these D1 prospects, all these NHL draft picks come in and a little bit embarrass themselves out there with Wendy on day one. But you know, we all started to get the hang of it eventually… it’s really fun and she’s the best. She’s awesome.”
