WASHINGTON, D.C. — It looked like the St. Louis Blues were about to take their first lead of the night over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, but Vitek Vanecek had other ideas.

The Czech netminder found himself going up against a 3-on-1 featuring top threats Jordan Kyrou, Pavel Buchnevich and Brayden Schenn. St. Louis’ trio pulled off a great tic-tac-toe passing play before Kyrou put a surefire shot on goal. In the knick of time, Vanecek dove across and robbed Kyrou with the glove for one of the best saves of the 2021-22 campaign, and arguably, of Vanecek’s career.

Here’s the save, that even got musician and St. Louis fan Tony X’s attention. “I hate it here,” he wrote on Twitter.

Vanecek has taken over as the Capitals starter and has been putting on a show between the pipes, while also finding consistency. Since Jan. 1, his .925 save percentage ranks ninth-best in the NHL, and his totals at 5-on-5 are even better.
