The Washington Capitals have re-signed Trevor van Riemsdyk to a three-year, $9 million extension, general manager Brian MacLellan announced on Saturday.
TVR's new deal carries an AAV of $3 million. He joins Rasmus Sandin, John Carlson and Nick Jensen as the only defensemen on the roster signed past next season.
Through 66 games this season, van Riemsdyk has registered a career-high seven goals and 19 points, and he has a +/- rating of plus-12. With Carlson still recovering and working his way back following a slapshot to the face, the 31-year-old has been playing the role of the top-pairing right-handed defenseman.

Van Riemsdyk also leads the Capitals with 146 blocks, which also rank as the seventh-most in the NHL. His 2:37 minutes of shorthanded ice time per game also lead the team.
Washington has a clear plan in place for its blue line, as MacLellan looks to build around Sandin and Martin Fehervary while also maintaining a veteran presence with Carlson, Jensen and now TVR. All three of those veterans are RHD, though Van Riemsdyk can also play the left side.
