WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals have acquired forward Craig Smith and a 2023 first-round pick, 2025 second-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Garnet Hathaway and Dmitry Orlov in a pregame trade, the team announced Thursday.

Hathaway and Orlov were both pending unrestricted free agents. Orlov, who had been a lifelong member of the organization, was reportedly in the midst of contract negotiations with the team, but talks weren't going anywhere with both sides far apart on term.

“We would like to thank Dmitry and Garnet for their contributions to our organization,” general manager Brian MacLellan said. “Dmitry has been with our organization for almost 14 years and was a key contributor in helping us win the Stanley Cup in 2018. Garnet has been an important part of our team and a role model off the ice for his contributions to our community. We wish both players all the best with Boston."

Boston will retain 50 percent of Orlov's salary. The Minnesota Wild are also involved in the trade, as they are part of the double retention for Orlov. They will get a fifth-rounder and also sent Andrei Svetlakov to D.C., who then flipped him to Boston as part of the deal.

Smith, 33, has four goals and six assists in 42 games for the Bruins this season.
