Sammi’s Daily: Strome, Brown Talk Capitals, Vanecek On Trade, Tkachuk Rumors

Capitals center Dylan Strome

The Washington Capitals saw a couple of their new additions speak for the first time since joining the club in the early days of free agency, and also saw a familiar face bid adieu to D.C.

Beyond the District and Metropolitan Division, NHL Free Agency is still very much active. Not only are UFAs like Nazem Kadri and Phil Kessel still on the market, but teams are also dealing with RFAs. And one in particular, Matthew Tkachuk, has gone from a long-term extension to a likely trade clip.

Here are all the latest news and notes from D.C. and across the NHL:

Capitals Links

  • Dylan Strome opens up about the end of his time with the Chicago Blackhawks, his fresh start with the Capitals and what he hopes to bring to the lineup in 2022-23. (WHN)
  • Connor Brown also spoke with the media and described his overall game and how he plans to make his mark in Washington. (WHN)
  • With both Strome and Brown joining the mix, some players could be the odd man out as the Capitals lineup takes form. (WHN)
  • Vitek Vanecek signed a three-year extension with the New Jersey Devils and also took the time to reflect on his time with Washington, as well as react to and share his thoughts on the trade and goalie overhaul. (WHN)

NHL Links

  • After a strong start to 2022 NHL Free Agency, there are quite a few standouts who could make a big playoff push this season. (PHN)
  • New Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella shows his soft side in another exclusive interview with Philly Hockey Now. (PHN)
  • Is Vladimir Tarasenko back on the market, and would the New York Islanders be a likely landing spot? (NYIHN)
  • From the looks of it, the Calgary Flames are close to saying goodbye to Matthew Tkachuk and will have two 100-point players depart this offseason. (CHN)

Sammi’s Top Shelf Takes

  • The Capitals new additions put a lot of cooks in the kitchen. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Joe Snively put up a strong fight to hold onto an NHL spot.
  • Speaking of up-and-coming NHLers, Vinny Iorio was already back in the gym after development camp and is training for next season. He looked great at camp and has added a lot of size and speed. I expect him to thrive when he makes the pro jump.

  • It’ll be interesting to see where Tkachuk lands, and it would be fun if he went back home to the Blues.
  • Happy birthday to former Capitals forward Scott Walker, who turns 49 today.
