The Washington Capitals started strong against the Seattle Kraken and seemed well o the way to weathering the storm. However, in the final minutes of action, they hit troubled waters, and the ship fell apart as the Kraken completed a comeback from two goals down and struck seven minutes into overtime for a big 3-2 win.

Washington got a point out of the rather strange matchup with the Kraken, who won seven straight, and although the Capitals weren’t thrilled with the final outcome or effort in Seattle, they are positive about where things are headed.

Here’s what the locker room said after the defeat:

Martin Fehervary

On what went wrong: “We start alright and then I think like the game went, we just a little bit slow down everything and we turn pucks a lot. And I don’t think we deserve to win today. We were getting worse, I think. They played pretty hard and we just didn’t do our job.”

On getting offense going with goals in back-to-back games after slow start: “Im always focusing on the defensive. On the offesnive side, it didn’t go my way so far this season. I’m just trying to break it. Now I score twice in a row, and I’m really excited about it. I’m trying to shoot the puck. I think as long as i’m gonna shoot, I can get a few more points, and I’m gonna keep doing it.”

Conor Sheary

On what happened as Washington surrendered a two-goal lead and fell 3-2 in OT: “It’s tough to say one specific thing. I think they came at us hard trying to push and get back in the game and that we kind of played on our heels a little bit. And I think for most of the second and third, they controlled possession and probably controlled the chances, too. I think it’s one of those things that started to snowball once we lost our footing.”

On the Capitals play trending upward as they wait to get injured guys back: “Yeah, I mean, I don’t think we want to keep it afloat. I think we want to win games. That’s the important thing. But I think aside from tonight the four games leading into this, even the loss to New Jersey, we thought we were playing a good game, just an overall 60 minutes. I think we can definitely build off a point and we’ll take it, but obviously, have to be better next one.

Darcy Kuemper

On Washington’s performance of late: “Yeah definitely, our game’s definitely been trending upwards. Tonight we might not have had our best stuff or all our legs, but we got up to a lead and unfortunately, couldn’t hang on for the two. But like you said we got a point and we just got to continue collecting as many as we can.”
