ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals saw a bit of a shakeup at their Thursday practice following a hard-earned victory against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday, as players got to choose which skills they wanted to work on.

On one rink, the team held offensive drills and shooting work with both goaltenders. And on the other side, players gathered for skating work with coach Wendy Marco.

Joe Snively, Lars Eller, Connor McMichael, Brett Leason, Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Aliaksei Protas, Matt Irwin, Lucas Johansen, Garnet Hathaway, Henrik Borgstrom, Martin Fehervary and Erik Gustafsson all took part in the skating drills.

Meanwhile, two players missed practice, as Dmitry Orlov is maintenance and day-to-day, according to head coach Peter Laviolette. T.J. Oshie is also day-to-day and will likely not dress for Saturday’s preseason finale against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Oshie was injured in the second period of Wednesday’s tilt. He took a hard hit from Joe Veleno and went hard into the boards before getting up and heading down the tunnel. He did not return.

No lines were run at Thursday’s skate. The team returns for Friday practice before facing the Blue Jackets on Saturday. Opening night is six days away, as Washington faces the Boston Bruins.
