ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals got a great sign ahead of morning skate as they saw Nicklas Backstrom take a major step forward.

No. 19 was on the ice in full gear, wearing a non-contact jersey and getting some work in at Saturday’s morning skate. He wasn’t overexerting, but overall, it’s a great sign for Backstrom.

Backstrom is coming off hip resurfacing surgery in June. The 34-year-old had chronic hip pain for years dating back to a 2015 procedure. He made the difficult decision to undergo the procedure, which some players have had but never fully came back from. He has not played this season and was limited to just 47 games in 2021-22.

There is no current timetable for Backstrom, who has gotten some other skating work in on his own in a tracksuit alongside Tom Wilson.
