The Washington Capitals are on the lookout for quite a few milestones, and Nicklas Backstrom hit one of them on Wednesday against the Edmonton Oilers. Backstrom reached 1,000 career points with a multi-point outing, and fittingly, that 1,000th point came on a primary assist.

Nicklas Backstrom picked up a goal early in the first on a surprise play in front. Anthony Mantha lobbed the puck on net and hit went off an Oilers defender. Backstrom then quickly backhanded it past Mikko Koskinen to make it 1-0. It marked Backstrom’s 999th career point and his fifth goal of the season.

Later on a second-period power play, Backstrom appeared to get his 1,000th point on an assist on a John Carlson power-play goal. However, it was deemed offside and waved off, and the 34-year-old knew it would be called back.

However, in the third period, he would get another chance as the Capitals headed to their fourth power play of the game. He made a pass up to T.J. Oshie, who was onside and ripped a quick shot past Koskinen to make it a 2-2 hockey game and give Backstrom his 1,000th career point. Carlson picked up the secondary assist.

Evgeny Kuznetsov secured the puck as Alex Ovechkin and company celebrated the milestone. Backstrom and Ovechkin reached another key milestone together on Tuesday, skating in their 1,000th game together. Washington has one more to watch out for, as Ovechkin is one goal away from passing Jagr for the third-most in NHL history.

Through 26 games this season, Backstrom has five goals and 15 assists, as well as points in five of his last six outings. The Swede missed the start of the year while rehabilitating a hip injury.
