Beyond free agency and trade rumors, hockey is still alive and well during the dog days of summer, with Da Beauty League returning for yet another season. And a pair of Washington Capitals are already leading the way.

Nic Dowd and Nick Jensen, two Capitals who are no strangers to Da Beauty League, put on quite a show in their respective openers.

Jensen opened his 2022 DBL campaign back on July 13 with TRIA. He is sporting Alex Ovechkin‘s No. 8 and embodied his captain’s sporting prowess against Tradition.

The 31-year-old showed off some great moves and ended the night with a hat trick for TRIA. In an interesting lineup coincidence, Jensen played with several Capitals alum on the backend, including Aaron Ness and Dennis Cholowski. However, it wasn’t enough, as TRIA fell 8-7.

Dowd, meanwhile, is sporting No. 16 with Element. They opened the campaign against TRIA on July 20 and got off to a good start with a 7-6 victory.

The 32-year-old played a big part in that win, scoring the first goal of the game on a nice give-and-go with Steven Fogarty. He also had the primary helper on Ryan Lindgren’s ultimate game-winning goal and finished the night with two points.

Dowd is coming off a career year with the Capitals where he registered 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points in 64 games. He also won 53.7 percent of his draws and helped drive success on the club’s powerhouse fourth line, while also being a top asset on the penalty kill. His standout play earned Dowd a three-year extension with Washington that he signed in November.

Jensen also had a breakout year in D.C. that saw him solidify his role as a top-4 shutdown blueliner. He also flourished as a puck-moving defenseman and set a new career-high in goals (5), assists (16) and points (21) through 76 games while playing on the second pairing with Dmitry Orlov.

Former Washington skaters Travis Boyd, Nate Schmidt and recent UFA Shane Gersich are also playing.

The 4-on-4, pick-up style season features three games a night on Wednesdays in July and Mondays and Wednesdays in August.
