The Washington Capitals injury situation got even worse on Saturday night against the Calgary Flames, as they lost two key players in Martin Fehervary and Darcy Kuemper after both were hurt minutes apart.

Washington announced during the second intermission that both Martin Fehervary and Darcy Kuemper suffered upper-body injuries in the second period and not return to action on Saturday.

Fehervary took a big hit along the boards from Milan Lucic and immediately went to the bench and down the tunnel in visible pain. Later in the frame, Kuemper took an elbow to the head and exchanged slashes with Tyler Toffoli. Kuemper reportedly pulled himself out of the game after the incident, so it’s not concussion protocol.

Charlie Lindgren has taken over the crease with Kuemper out. The 32-year-old veteran stopped 24 of 26 shots before exiting the game. Meanwhile, Alex Alexeyev is taking on more minutes with No. 42 out.

The Capitals said that both Kuemper and Fehervary will be re-evaluated on Sunday.

Washington is now missing several key pieces due to injury, as the Capitals have also been working without the services of Nicklas Backstrom (hip resurfacing surgery), Tom Wilson (ACL surgery), Carl Hagelin (hip surgery), Connor Brown (ACL surgery), Beck Malenstyn (finger surgery) and Dmitry Orlov (lower-body injury).
