WASHINGTON— Washington Capitals forward Joe Snively is headed to the AHL’s Hershey Bears after clearing waivers on Sunday.

Snively was placed on waivers on Saturday in order to make space on the roster for Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson to return. With Snively clearing, Backstrom and Wilson can officially be activated from the long-term injured reserve and injured reserve respectively.

Backstrom and Wilson will make their season debuts on Sunday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Snively was a healthy scratch for most of the season, with mid-season additions Sonny Milano and Nicolas Aube-Kubel stepping up amid injuries and winning spots in the lineup, which led to Snively being one of the odd men out with the team needing to make space for 19 and 43 to return.

The Herndon, V.A. native played in six games this year and had one assist. He played in 12 games last season, dishing seven points before undergoing wrist surgery.

He will now get more playing time and responsibility down with the Bears, who also welcomed Aliaksei Protas back following his re-assignment on Saturday.
