ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals got some positive and negative news on the injury front as they took the ice for their morning skate ahead of Friday’s tilt with the Seattle Kraken, and also saw some injured names take big steps forward.

Tom Wilson skated with the team for the first time, taking part in the entire morning skate and staying on to skate with healthy scratches afterward. Nicklas Backstrom did the same, and this is his third time skating with the club this season. Both were in full gear and non-contact jerseys. Spirits were high, but this is still the beginning of a long process for both. Regardless, it’s a big step forward.

Also, Dmitry Orlov was on the ice in a regular jersey and stayed on for the entirety of the morning skate and remained on for extra work. However, he will miss his 15th straight game with a lower-body injury. During rushes, he was on a pairing with Nicolas Aube-Kubel. Head coach Peter Laviolette said Orlov is still listed as day-to-day, and he remains on injured reserve.

Meanwhile, Darcy Kuemper and Martin Fehervary were absent from the morning skate. Both are still listed as day-to-day with upper-body injuries and will miss their third straight games when Washington hosts the Kraken on Friday. Kuemper is on the IR, while Fehervary is not.

Both Kuemper and Fehervary injured on Saturday against the Calgary Flames. Kuemper took an elbow to the head from Tyler Toffoli and pulled himself out of the game, not feeling right. Minutes before that, Fehervary took a hard hit along the boards from Milan Lucic and immediately left the ice in visible discomfort. He was seen wearing a sling postgame.

The Capitals will be looking for its first three-game win streak of the season at home against Seattle. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. ET.
