The Washington Capitals saw two key players in Darcy Kuemper and Martin Fehervary go down with injury on Sunday, and the team got an update on the two with the team not practicing on Sunday in Edmonton.

Head coach Peter Laviolette said during his media availability on Sunday that Kuemper and Fehervary are both day-to-day with upper-body injuries. Fehervary will also not play on Monday against the Oilers.

Roughly eight minutes into the second period, Fehervary took a hard hit along the boards from Milan Lucic. He immediately skated off in visible pain and went straight down the tunnel. He did not return from action and was spotted leaving the arena in a sling.

The 23-year-old has two goals and two assists this season and had goals in back-to-back games before getting hurt.

Shortly after that, Kuemper left Saturday’s game after taking an elbow to the head from Tyler Toffoli. He exchanged slashes with the Flames forward before pulling himself out of the game, as he didn’t feel right and couldn’t continue. It’s a big loss for the Capitals, as the 32-year-old has started 20 games and has a .916 save percentage in his first year in D.C.

It appears that Washington will have to make a goalie recall. Hunter Shepard is expected to come up, as he is scratched for the Hershey Bears vs. the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday. Zach Fucale is starting, and the team signed Justin Kapelmaster to a PTO to back him up.
