ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals have recalled defenseman Dylan McIlrath from the AHL's Hershey Bears.

McIlrath is the Bears' captain and has 10 assists in 44 games this season, along with a team-leading 82 penalty minutes. He has played in a total of 66 career NHL games and has three goals, two assists and 121 penalty minutes over that span.

The 6-3, 232-pound blueliner was recalled back in December to help fill in on the blue line for the injury-riddled Capitals as Erik Gustafsson was listed as day-to-day, but he was sent down the same day with Dmitry Orlov returning from injured reserve against the Winnipeg Jets.

It is unclear what the reason for the transaction is at this time. John Carlson remains on the injured reserve, but the Capitals have seven other defensemen in the mix with Matt Irwin and Alex Alexeyev interchanging on the third pairing. However, neither has been playing the entire duration of the game alongside Martin Fehervary, who has also been operating with Trevor van Riemsdyk.

With McIlrath coming up, Alex Ovechkin is no longer listed on the team's active roster as he is away from the team following the death of his father, Mikhail. He is being given as much time as he needs to grieve and will return when he is ready. There is no timetable for his return.
