The Washington Capitals are officially playoff bound.

Washington officially punched its ticket to the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the New York Islanders in regulation, 4-2, on Sunday.

This marks the Capitals’ eight consecutive trip to the postseason. Since they won the Stanley Cup in 2018, the team has seen three first-round exits. Washington currently has 13 members of the Cup-winning team still on the roster.

The Capitals (42-23-10) secured the final playoff spot in the East. They currently sit three points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for third place in the Metro.

This trip to the postseason also marks the team’s second trip to the playoffs under head coach Peter Laviolette. Laviolette’s 76 career postseason victories rank 15th in NHL history.
