Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis hasn’t played against Alex Ovechkin for quite a while, but he’s still all too familiar with the damage that the Washington Capitals captain can do.

St. Louis discussed Ovechkin before Saturday’s tilt and joked that besides the Great 8’s gray hair, he hasn’t changed much when it comes to his goal-scoring talent.

“He’s got more grays like me,” St. Louis teased. “Me and him led the league for a while. It’s probably more like he’s stayed the same. Which is hard to do in this league as you age.”

Over 16 seasons in the NHL with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Calgary Flames and New York Rangers, St. Louis made quite the statement. The All-Star dished 391 goals and 642 assists for 1,033 points in 1,134 career games in the Show.

Meanwhile, Ovechkin is still going strong at 37. The Russian sits third on the NHL’s all-time goals list at 780 goals. He sits 22 shy of passing Gordie Howe for second and 115 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894. Ovechkin also sits 21st on the NHL’s all-time points list with 1,410 points in 1,276 career games.

Ovechkin is still waiting to get on the board this season as the team has started the 2022-23 campaign 0-2-0. He is hoping to find twine and get Washington back in the win column on Saturday against St. Louis’ Canadiens. Head coach Peter Laviolette also made changes to the Capitals lineup to try and spark Ovi and the offense at even strength and on the power play, which is 0-for-9 to open the year.

“That’s a start we don’t wanna have, two losses in a row. It’s wake-up call and we have to get better and play well in the next one,” Ovechkin said back on Thursday after a disappointing 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
