Sammi’s Daily: Ovechkin’s Side Gig, Fehervary In Paris, NHL 23, Rumors

With the Washington Capitals eagerly awaiting the start of training camp, some of their players are still making the most of their summers and wrapping up their offseasons away from the rink — and in unique ways.

Alex Ovechkin spent some time working phones, while Martin Fehervary has made his way to Paris for the NHL/NHLPA European Player Media Tour. Fehervary joins a long list of fellow European players, including Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisaitl, Ottawa Senators youngster Tim Stutzle and more.

Meanwhile, there’s still a lot of business being done in free agency, and top players like Phil Kessel could find new landing spots sooner rather than later.

Here are all the latest news and notes from D.C. and across the NHL:

Washington Capitals Links

  • Ovechkin spent some time working for Fonbet in a call center for customers — and he got mixed reception (no pun intended). (WHN)
  • Hendrix Lapierre will join 2022 first-overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky, Seattle Kraken prospect Shane Wright and more future stars at the NHLPA Rookie Showcase at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Sept. 6. (WHN)
  • Speaking of Lapierre, fellow Quebec native Anthony Mantha had nothing but good things to say about the 20-year-old center. (WHN)
  • P.K. Subban is still looking for a gig this season — could it be with the Capitals? (WHN)

NHL Links

  • The Islanders needed to make some moves after missing out on Nazem Kadri. They ended up signing former Washington defenseman Dennis Cholowski, whose game provides more questions than answers. New York Islanders (NYIHN)
  • Another Eastern Conference team could be ready to make moves as well, as the Canadiens may be shopping Christian Dvorak. Montreal Canadiens (MHN)
  • The Bruins are bringing the old band back together but have a brand new plan and system under new head coach Jim Montgomery. Boston Bruins (BHN)

Sammi’s Top Shelf Takes

  • Shane Gersich and Daniel Sprong remain free agents with just weeks to go until training camp. It’ll be interesting to see where they end up, or if they sign AHL or overseas contracts.
  • Trevor Zegras and Sarah Nurse will be featured on the cover of NHL23.

BREAKING: NHL 23 Will Feature Trevor Zegras, Sarah Nurse On Cover

  • Speaking of which, it’s crazy to think that Sidney Crosby has yet to get a video game cover. I know this is a Capitals blog but still… a bit wild. Three-time Stanley Cup champion, gold medalist…
