Kaprizov imitating Ovechkin

ARLINGTON, V.A. — Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin said that he was disappointed to miss the 2022 NHL All-Star Weekend after testing positive for COVID-19 just before the break.

However, while he was home, he made sure to tune into the festivities, otherwise having “nothing to do.” And there, he saw Minnesota Wild star Kirill Kaprizov do something great.

Sporting Ovechkin’s classic yellow laces, Kaprizov took off his Wild jersey to reveal an Ovechkin sweater underneath. Then, reenacted Ovechkin’s Gatorade warm-up routine before grabbing a right-handed stick from Evgeny Kuznetsov and scoring in his breakaway challenge.

He also ended the impersonation with Ovi’s vintage “hot stick” celebration.

“Yeah I think it’s pretty cool, you know? I think it was fun and I don’t know why he don’t get too many points. What’s the referee doing out there?” Ovechkin laughed.

The 36-year-old was asymptomatic and is likely to return to the lineup for Tuesday’s tilt with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Tom Wilson ended up taking his place at the All-Star Weekend.

“Obviously I want to play in All-Star game I want to play against Edmonton…. but that is the rules. Nothing you can do,” Ovechkin said of missing time.
