The Washington Capitals got great news ahead of Game 1 in Sunrise, as captain Alex Ovechkin will lace ’em up for the team’s series opener against the Florida Panthers to kick off their 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Head coach Peter Laviolette after Tuesday’s optional skate that Ovechkin will play on Tuesday, per NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti.

Ovechkin had missed the final three games of the season with a day-to-day upper-body injury suffered back on April 24. The Great 8 was a full go at practice on Sunday and Monday. At those practices, he was taking rushes in his usual spot on the top line. Ovi also took part in Tuesday’s optional skate in Florida.

“We knew we make playoffs, and we just decided to take a rest,” Ovechkin said, adding, “It’s going to be total different games than the regular season, obviously.”

It is a major plus for the Capitals, who will need all of the star power they can get against the high-flying Panthers. Ovechkin led Washington with 50 goals and 90 points this past season. This will be the 36-year-old’s 14th career postseason appearance.
