WASHINGTON, D.C. — With the Washington Capitals facing elimination, Alex Ovechkin set the tone early for his club to open Game 6 against the Florida Panthers.

The Capitals captain sent Aaron Ekblad flying with a massive check in the opening minutes of the game. Ekblad appeared to go down and get hurt on the play and went down the tunnel following the hit. He skated just 40 seconds to open the game. He did return for one shift but soon returned to the locker room.

Ovechkin has been a major leader in the hits department in this series, coming into Game 6 with 24 hits this series, as physicality has been a major factor throughout this first-round matchup as well. The Great 8 also has a point in all five games so far.

“If the big man is hitting, and I guess everyone has got less games than him, less experience, less… GOAT-ness. So if the big man is hitting, you better be hitting, too,” Oshie said earlier in the series. “He’s going to drag everyone else along with him. He wears the ‘C’ for a reason. He leads us into battle when he’s going hard and he’s playing physical, that just bleeds through the rest of the team
