ARLINGTON, V.A. — Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will be away from the team to attend to a family matter and the health of a loved one, general manager Brian MacLellan announced on Tuesday.

Ovechkin will miss Tuesday's home game against the Carolina Hurricanes. There is no current timeline for his return.

With the 37-year-old out, the Capitals have recalled Joe Snively from the Hershey Bears to serve as an extra forward.

Ovechkin has played in all but one game this season and has 32 goals and 22 assists. He is currently at 812 career goals and is 83 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record.
