NHL 23 has officially revealed their cover athletes, as Anaheim Ducks sensation Trevor Zegras and Team Canada forward Sarah Nurse will both be on the front of the latest video game installment.

Nurse becomes the first-ever women’s hockey player to grace the cover of an NHL video game. It is also the first time that two athletes will be on the North American cover. Back in 2011 in Sweden, there were two athletes, as Vancouver Canucks twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin were on the cover of the PlayStation 3 game in their home country.

There were going to be two cover athletes for NHL16: Chicago Blackhawks forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. However, Kane was removed following sexual assault allegations.

At the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Nurse was fundamental in helping lead Team Canada to a gold medal, as she put up five goals and 13 assists in seven games. Nurse played in the PWHPA league in 2019-20 and 2020-21, and also spent time in the CWHL. She is the sister of Edmonton Oilers blueliner Darnell Nurse.

Nurse was also a second-round pick in the 2016 NWHL draft, going to the Boston Pride at eighth overall. She has won Olympic gold and silver. She has also won bronze and gold at the World Championships. Nurse also has a U18 WJC gold medal.

Zegras earned the cover after a standout rookie campaign that saw him take the NHL by storm with his skill and crafty moves. His “Dishigan” move went viral after he flipped the puck over the net to Sonny Milano for one of the best goals of the season. He also pulled off the “Michigan” in another game. Zegras’ creativity earned him a invite to the NHL’s All-Star Weekend for the sole purpose of him participating in the Skills competition, where he dazzled with Peter LaFleur imitation and scored a beautiful one-handed goal while blindfolded.

Also, per ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski, the “Zegras” — in reference to the over-the-net pass — is one of the moves available in the upcoming installment.

The official reveal will be on Thursday, Aug. Fans can watch the trailer tomorrow here.
