Hockey Now Headlines: Oshie to LTIR, Sabres Practice Injuries

Training camp is off and running for the Washington Capitals and other NHL clubs as everyone gets ready for the start of the 2024-25 regular season. The Capitals have their first preseason game on Sunday, September 22, with a 3:00 showdown against the Philadelphia Flyers. It will be at Capital One Arena. The regular season will begin on Saturday, October 12, at 7:00 P.M. with a matchup against the New Jersey Devils. Moving on, here are some Hockey Now Headlines for September 20.



Hockey Now Headlines: Washington Capitals

Washington Hockey Now: Washington Capitals winger T.J. Oshie is expected to be placed on long-term injured reserve. Capitals GM Chris Patrick and Oshie released statements on the news.

Washington Hockey Now: Jakub Vrana’s teammates are glad to see him back with the club on a PTO. Vrana can potentially earn a contract that would reunite him with the organization that drafted him and where he won the Stanley Cup.

Washington Hockey Now: Hershey Bears head coach Todd Nelson discussed Capitals rookie camp and players taking that next step.

New Jersey Hockey Now: The New Jersey Devils signed forward Dawson Mercer to a multi-year contract extension.

New Jersey Hockey Now: New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier is rooting for his former San Jose Sharks teammate Kevin Labanc to make New Jersey’s roster. The Devils signed Labanc to a PTO.

Sportsnet: The Athletic’s Rob Rossi reports that future Hockey Hall of Famer Jaromir Jagr is planning to retire from playing hockey after the 2024-25 Czech Extraliga season. He plays for the Kladno Knights. Jagr is currently playing in his 37th professional hockey season. He suited up in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, and Calgary Flames.

USA Today: Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman is among players still unsigned as NHL training camps open.

Columbus Blue Jackets: The Columbus Blue Jackets named their former winger Rick Nash as their new Director of Hockey Operations. Nash played for Columbus, the New York Rangers, and the Boston Bruins.

Vegas Hockey Now: Goalie Robin Lehner is not reporting to the Vegas Golden Knights. The 33-year-old netminder last suited up for the Golden Knights during the 2021-22 NHL campaign.

Florida Hockey Now: The Florida Panthers signed both Boqvist brothers. George Richards explains how the two players could work out for the team.
