Capitals Provide 50th Anniversary Celebration Plans

The Washington Capitals have a lot planned for their fans this season to celebrate their 50th anniversary as a franchise. The organization announced that there will be fan celebrations, related merchandise, community programs, and other events throughout the 2024-25 season. Capitals owner Ted Leonsis said the following:



“Our amazing fans are the heart of our organization, and we are excited for a special season-long celebration in honor of our 50th anniversary. Our incredible community drives all our celebratory events and initiatives. We look forward to commemorating our historic season with our passionate fanbase, dedicated players, esteemed alumni and devoted supporters.”

Capitals chairman Dick Patrick said, “This upcoming season presents our organization a unique opportunity to celebrate our history and the great contributions our alumni have made to the Capitals franchise. We are excited to welcome them back and recognize their achievements with our extraordinary fanbase.”

50th Anniversary October Events

Washington will hold a 50 Fest presented by TikTok at Capital One Arena on Thursday, October 10 to celebrate five decades for the franchise. The entire team, as well as 60 Capitals alumni, will be in attendance. Doors open at 5:00 P.M. There will be staged programming involving Capital players and alumni. After, fans will be able to enjoy a Third Eye Blind concert. Fans of all ages are encouraged to attend this. All fans who go will get a commemorative 50th Anniversary Capitals T-shirt. Tickets are $19.74, a ticket price nod to the team’s NHL debut in 1974. The tickets can be purchased at washcaps.com/50Fest.

An alumni game will also take place on Friday, October 11 at MedStar Capitals Iceplex at 2:00 P.M. The game is open to the public and attendance is free.

The Capitals open their 50th Anniversary regular season on Saturday, October 12, against the New Jersey Devils. Current Washington players and alumni will take part in the team’s Rock the Red Carpet event. There will also be a special pre-game ceremony before the puck drops.

More Capitals 50th Anniversary Details

The Capitals will have a 50th Anniversary concourse display at Capital One Arena throughout the 2024-25 campaign. It will be in Section 103. There will be memorabilia in this display from fifty years of the franchise’s existence. This includes jerseys, trophies, and equipment. Some of the items already scheduled to be involved for this display include Alex Ovechkin’s skates from the 2015 Winter Classic, a Screaming Eagle Peter Bondra jersey, a blocker pad from Olie Kolzig, and hockey gloves used by former Capitals forward Dale Hunter.
