They didn’t win the draft lottery, but the Washington Capitals will enter next month’s NHL entry draft with a top 10 pick.

The Capitals will pick eighth overall in the draft, based on Monday’s lottery results. Entering with the eighth-best odds to earn the top overall pick, the Capitals ultimately did not budge from that spot.

The Chicago Blackhawks, who entered Monday with the third-highest odds, were the winners of the draft lottery โ€” making the Windy City the likely landing spot for Connor Bedard, a Canadian center touted as a generational talent and the consensus top draft prospect.

The Anaheim Ducks, who had the highest odds, fell to No. 2. The Columbus Blue Jackets, with the second-best odds, fell to No. 3.

Here’s the order of the first 14 picks:

  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  2. Anaheim Ducks
  3. Columbus Blue Jackets
  4. San Jose Sharks
  5. Montreal Canadiens
  6. Arizona Coyotes
  7. Philadelphia Flyers
  8. Washington Capitals
  9. Detroit Red Wings
  10. St. Louis Blues
  11. Vancouver Canucks
  12. Ottawa Senators (from Arizona)
  13. Buffalo Sabres
  14. Pittsburgh Penguins
  15. Nashville Predators
  16. Calgary Flames

Picks 17-32 will be determined based on the results of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The NHL entry draft is scheduled for June 28-29 from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

Jared Serre covers the Washington Capitals for Washington Hockey Now. He is a graduate of West Virginia University.
